Cryptocurrency Scams Recovery

More people than ever before are investing in cryptocurrency, and there’s no doubt that it can be a lucrative and exciting proposition. However, with so many new investors entering the market, the number of fraudsters has multiplied, too.

To make things more difficult for those wishing to trade or invest in crypto, the market is largely unregulated, giving scammers even more opportunities to steal funds from their victims – who are often not even aware that a con is underway until it’s too late.

How Do Crypto Scams Work?

There are many crypto scams out there. One particualrly prevalent con is known as the ‘rug pull’ con. This typically works by the scammers creating a buzz online about a new crypto investment opportunity, where traders stand to make thousands of dollars easily and without risk. Promotion will appear all over social media, and trading forums and the scheme will often appear extremely convincing. Fake news stories and the fraudulent use of celebrities may even be deployed to convince people to invest.

What makes these types of scams even more difficult to spot is that, with the influx of new investors caused by all the hype, the value of the particular cryptocurrency might initially go up, making the whole scheme look entirely convincing. However, in most cases, the founders behind the scam will suddenly shut down the website, and disappear without a trace – taking all of the remaining invested money left in the pot with them. Other scams involve con artists convincing investors to put money into a new type of crypto that they promise will be extremely lucrative – but that doesn’t actually exist.

How to Spot a Crypto Scam

It’s important to stay vigilant when it comes to crypto scams. In general, any investment opportunity that seems to be too good to be true usually is – and approach with caution any broker who offers you a trading opportunity that is described as offering speedy, consistent, high return with no risk.

If the broker or platform you’re using regularly asks you to invest more regularly, and for ever larger sums of money, this is a warning sign that a scam is being undertaken, too. Finally, if there’s no facility for you to see the actual cryptocurrency you’re investing in, or are unable to exchange it for other cryptos, then these, too, are red flags.

Biggest Crypto Scams to Date

Crypto scammers began operating in the market in large numbers from around 2014 onwards. One of the biggest crypto scams to date was that run by OneCoin, which was shut down in 2017. The trading platform was a front for a giant Ponzi scheme, which rewarded existing members for new sign-ups they brought in. By the time OneCoin was shut down, it had conned about $5 billion out of approximately three million investors.

BitCoin, active from 2016-to 2018 was a pyramid scheme that required members to buy the platform’s own currency, which then needed to be kept on this platform. Participants were promised a return of about $50 million if they made an initial investment of $1,000.

PlusToken, one of the most recent of the crypto mega-scams, was closed down in 2020. Although advertised as a way for traders to make serious cash in the markets, it actually only allowed investors to buy the platform’s own tokens – at its end, the scam had conned more than $3 billion from its many members, and the Chinese authorities had managed to track down and arrest a number of the organizers behind it.
